Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational Setting and Reporting: The Human Resources Section of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals ("Mechanism") invites applications for internships starting June 2025. The Mechanism is mandated to perform a number of essential functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

In carrying out these essential functions the Mechanism maintains the legacies of these two pioneering ad hoc international criminal courts and strives to reflect best practices in the field of international criminal justice. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week. Responsibilities and Duties: Under the supervision of the Chief of the Human Resources Section, Associate Human Resources Officer or a staff member in the section to which they are assigned.

The intern will manage the Internship Programme, which includes acting as focal point for all internal and external enquiries regarding internships; drafting correspondence and handling telephone enquiries; preparing internship offer letters and following up on documentation; informing departments on the status of applications; providing induction briefing to new interns; processing check-outs and updating databases. The incumbent will ensure smooth working relationship with potential candidates, other interns and staff members within the Mechanism.

Additionally, the Internship Coordinator will assist the Human Resources Section with ad-hoc duties when necessary.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a relevant first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent),

b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a relevant graduate school programme (second university degree (master’s degree) or equivalent, or higher), Preferred areas of study: Human Resources, Administration or related studies. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Previous experience in Human Resources management or Administration is desirable.

Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel and MS Power Point.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the Mechanism. Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other official UN language is desirable.
