Duties and Responsibilities
Purpose of Internship The purpose of the internship/volunteer assignment is to support DIOS ID by providing Arabic-English interpretation and related assistance for investigations, assessments and intake activities, and by supporting the accurate documentation and understanding of information gathered through these processes. Description of Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall guidance of designated DIOS ID staff, the intern/volunteer will provide interpretation and related support to investigative, assessment and intake activities, as required. Specific activities include:
Provide accurate and impartial Arabic-English interpretation during interviews, discussions, intake contacts, assessments or other investigative support activities, as requested.
Assist in translating or summarizing relevant documents, communications or case-related materials, while preserving meaning, tone and confidentiality.
Support DIOS ID staff in preparing for interviews, assessments and intake activities, including by reviewing relevant background materials and organizing documentation.
Assist in preparing interview notes, summaries, chronologies or other written records, as required and under the guidance of DIOS ID staff.
Support the organization and handling of sensitive information in accordance with applicable confidentiality and information-management requirements.
Provide other support to investigations, assessments and intake processes, as requested. Learning Objectives The internship/volunteer assignment will provide exposure to investigative work, assessment processes, intake procedures and the use of interpretation in a United Nations oversight context. The intern/volunteer is expected to gain practical understanding of confidentiality requirements, documentation standards, impartial interpretation, professional conduct and the role of language support in ensuring fair and effective investigative processes.
Qualifications/special skills
Enrolment in, or recent completion of, a university degree in translation, interpretation, law, international relations, social sciences, public administration or another relevant field.
Excellent command of Arabic and English, including the ability to interpret accurately and professionally between both languages.
Strong drafting, organizational and analytical skills.
Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion, integrity and respect for confidentiality.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

The internship/volunteer assignment will be carried out under the supervision of designated DIOS ID staff.
The intern/volunteer will be expected to comply with applicable UNRWA rules, confidentiality requirements and standards of conduct.
The duration, modality and working arrangements will be determined in accordance with applicable UNRWA procedures and operational requirements.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
