JOB PURPOSE
To provide a GIS mapping service for the South Sudan office. Provide technical support in line with HQ policies on the use and dissemination of GIS data.
RESPONSIBILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive)
Maintain GIS databases and deliver map products on schedule in line with the organization standards, focusing on logistics, Program, Emergency, Security, UNHAS mapping, flood assessment, roads rehabilitation projects, and warehouse maps. Collect access constraints information from partners and disseminate it through Access Constraints maps.
Synchronize spatial data related to WFP Country Office with Headquarter to ensure consistency and alignment.
Manage the smooth delivery of newly acquired data from the field, ensuring proper cleaning, processing, and integration into WFP systems.
Compile and disseminate logistics and mapping information to the humanitarian community to support coordination and operational planning.
Develop geographic information policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures (SOPs), while documenting lessons learned and best practices.
Collect and analyze information sources such as situation reports, field bulletins, and other operational reporting, translating the content into geographic data for analysis and visualization.
Implement upgrades and innovative solutions to improve efficiency.
Support Logistics Cluster, WFP operations, and field offices with tailored GIS products.
Ensure compliance with WFP data security and confidentiality policies. Ensure compliance with WFP data security and confidentiality policies.
Provide technical support and guidance for the establishment, maintenance, and analysis of project monitoring and evaluation systems.
Maintain and update global geographic information databases (geo-databases), including satellite imagery, gazetteers, and other spatial reference datasets.
Provide the WFP Country Office with GIS and mapping capabilities, including the preparation of thematic analytical maps that support country-level operational functions such as logistics.
Prepare maps that inventory local resources and capacities (e.g., infrastructure, personnel, NGO services) to complement WFP operations.
Maintain the GIS plotter for printing maps, ensuring adequate supply of consumables and smooth functionality.
Develop GIS tools and systems (web map, dashboards, story maps, data collection tools, mobile apps and Others
Support GIS capacity-building projects, including initiatives with the UN Information Centre and South Sudan Information Centre.
Fulfill all map requests and produce GIS products as required, ensuring deadlines are met and outputs are of high quality.
Contribute to donor reporting and visibility through high-quality GIS products.
Perform any other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Experience
For a master’s degree holder, a minimum of five years or for a bachelor's degree holder, at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in geographic information management, particularly within the humanitarian and/or emergencies context, including experience in conflict-affected environments is required. Strong expertise in Cartographic production is mandatory with the experiences in the following areas:
Geo-spatial analysis
Humanitarian mapping
Conflicts Mapping
Emergency Mapping
Planning and management of Geospatial projects in dealing with cartography and geographic information services.
Map publication and clearance
International boundary issues
Esri products (ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS portal and ArcGIS Online)
Remote sensing and data visualization
Using Artificial Intelligence (AI)to improve mapping and GIS systems
Skills and competencies
• Experience in working for the emergency operations and/or hardship duty station is desirable.
• Excellent communication skills and commitment to teamwork.
• Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills
• Strong analytical, reporting and problem-solving skills
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
