Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and training to all peacekeeping and special political missions worldwide as well as to other UN Offices, Agencies Funds and Programs. The Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT) delivers innovative geospatial, information and communications technology solutions to support United Nations operations and decision-making processes globally.
This internship is located in the Analytics and Location Intelligence Unit (ALIU) within the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS), SGITT, at UNGSC in Valencia, Spain. The Unit develops and delivers geospatial analytics, Earth Observation, geospatial analysis, and location capabilities to support operational planning, situational awareness, monitoring, and evidence-based decision-making across the United Nations system.
The intern will support the team in the analysis and integration of Earth Observation and geospatial data to contribute to geospatial information and situational awareness activities. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of ALIU and will support the team in the following tasks:
1. Night-Time Light Analysis & Integration: Assist in developing analytical pipelines centred on open-source satellite night-time light data to support geo-analytical activities, particularly for border monitoring, including triggering targeted Very High-Resolution optical imagery analysis, and integrating results into operational workflows.
2. Geospatial & Imagery Analysis: Support other Remote Sensing Analysis activities using multi-sensor night-time lights and other Earth Observation data (e.g., for change detection, time-series analysis, and monitoring) to inform planning, monitoring, and decision-making.
3. OSINT & Indicators Extraction: Assist in collecting and integrating open-source information and extracting geospatial indicators from remote sensing data.
4. Quality, Research & Coordination: Support data validation, documentation, research on new technologies (incl. AI), and coordination to ensure quality output and compliance with standards.
5. Other duties: Coordinating with other units within the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS) and support the integration of datasets and analytical outputs into UN Maps and related services, ensuring that data, visualizations, analytical products, and technical solutions meet established quality standards and comply with organizational processes and best practices.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). The field of study must be closely related to remote sensing and geospatial information systems. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Demonstrated knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams is required. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable.
Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
