Background and Justification

Name of the Position: Public Health Officer

P2

Purpose of the Position: The purpose of the position is to support the implementation, analysis and monitoring of public health programmes and activities. The incumbent will provide technical input to WHO teams and counterparts in areas such as health promotion, prevention, surveillance, preparedness, response and health systems strengthening.

Organizational context

Depending on the location of the position, the incumbent will report to the Team Leader, Director of the Public Health Programme, or Head of the WHO country office. The incumbent will work as part of a technical team and support collaboration with national counterparts, UN agencies, donors, academic institutions and other partners.

Summary of Assigned Duties

  • Conduct analysis and research on public health topics to support the development of public health programmes and activities.
  • Contribute to the drafting of public health guidelines and provide input into plans of action for public health policies and health systems.
  • Support monitoring of workplans and budgets, including resource mobilization and follow-up on implementation of planned activities.
  • Analyze information on best practices in Public Health and health systems and report finding to Responsible Officer.
  • Participates in capacity building in the area of Public health systems and the management and financing of the systems.
  • Participate in community outreach activities concerning the extension of health-care networks.
  • Contribute to the drafting of public health reports and acts as a focal point to Public Health topics in the area of work.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Education Qualifications

Essential

A first university degree in medicine, public health, or a health-related field from a recognized university.

Desirable

An advanced university degree in medicine, public health, or a health-related field from a recognized university.

Experience

Work Experience

Essential

At least two years of professional, internship, research, or volunteer experience in public health activities. Experience conducting analysis and research on public health topics.

Desirable

Experience working with government agencies and/or local ministries of health at national and/or subnational level. Experience working with WHO, UN agencies, and/or other international organizations.

Use of Language Skills

Languages

Essential:

Expert knowledge in written and verbal English

Desirable:

Working knowledge in written and verbal form of another official UN/WHO language
