How can you make a difference?

Purpose of Activity/Assignment:To provide expert technical support to the Global Practice on Child Nutrition and Development to develop and advance the climate resilience of UNICEF’s global nutrition programmes, to protect children’s nutrition in the context of increasing climate hazards that threaten to reverse progress on ending child malnutrition.

Scope of Work/Activities and tasks:The tasks are grouped under five themes and the specific numbered deliverables are spread over the period of the consultancy i.e the deliverables are not completed sequentially.

Thought leadership: Contribute to the development of global thought leadership products to further knowledge on the links between climate change and maternal and child nutrition and inform climate resilient nutrition policy and programming. This will include development of a brief on climate nutrition anticipatory action and a collection of case studies on country climate nutrition programming, as well as contributions to broader knowledge products on areas relevant to climate and nutrition. Leading to set of case studies on climate nutrition action (deliverable 1.1) and global technical brief on climate nutrition anticipatory action (1.2)
Research and evidence: Contribute to the implementation of UNICEF’s global climate nutrition evidence agenda, including technical support for evidence generation, development of research concept notes and proposals to access funding for planned research projects, support for the design and implementation of research projects, and documentation of findings for publication. This will include contributions to the development of guides on climate nutrition vulnerability analysis and climate nutrition monitoring. Regular reports will be submitted to demonstrate progress (deliverables 2.1,2.3, 2.4,2.6,2.7,2.9). Other deliverables will include a guidance document on climate nutrition vulnerability assessment (2.2), a guidance on climate nutrition monitoring methodologies (2.5) and evidence paper documenting results of a research study or innovation on climate and nutrition (2.8).
Partnerships: Contribute to the identification and development of internal and external partnerships to further climate resilient nutrition, including other global practices within UNICEF, other UN agencies and global coordination mechanisms on climate and nutrition, and contribute to external meetings to represent UNICEF’s climate nutrition agenda and strategic aims. Deliverables reported under no.5 below.
Technical excellence and capacity building: Contribute to the fulfilment of technical assistance requests specific to climate and nutrition from country offices, including online support, review of country documents, and development of briefs and tools. Update and contribute to the online climate nutrition toolkit for country offices, including additional tools and briefs to support quality implementation of climate resilient nutrition programmes and funding proposals. Support the internal capacity building of UNICEF staff on climate and nutrition at global and country levels. This includes co-facilitating country climate nutrition workshops with country offices – both in person and online – and co-facilitating webinars/ online workshops for staff through the CND climate nutrition network and country climate nutrition exchange. Regular reports will be submitted to describe technical assistance provided in response to technical assistance requests on climate and nutrition submitted to the Global Practice on Child Nutrition and Development (deliverables 4.4, 4.7, 4.10, 4.12, 4.16). Other deliverables will include an updated climate nutrition toolkit for country office use (4.1 and 4.13), outputs from 5 country capacity building workshops (4.2, 4.5, 4.9, 4.11, 4.15) and outputs from 5 global or country strategic webinars/ remote workshops (4.3, 4.6, 4.8, 4.14, 4.17).
Advocacy and fundraising: Provide technical support for the development of funding proposals that include climate resilient nutrition actions, including country level proposals, multi-country proposals and global proposals, and contribute to global policy opportunities and strategic events to position nutrition in global climate agenda, and climate nutrition actions in global nutrition agendas. Regular reports will be submitted to describe advocacy and fundraising activities including inputs into funding proposals, and progress on developing global partnerships on climate and nutrition (deliverables 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6).

Minimum requirements

Education: Masters Degree in public health nutrition, plus undergraduate degree in nutrition or relevant social sciences.
Work Experience: At least fifteen years of professional work experience in public health nutrition focused on multi-sectoral action for prevention and management of malnutrition in low/middle income countries. This should include:
  • 15 years’ professional experience providing technical assistance and capacity building to countries
  • Experience in thought leadership, evidence review and generation,
  • Creating knowledge products to guide nutrition decision-makers and practitioners (technical briefs, case studies, evidence reviews, reports, capacity building materials etc)
  • Forging and nurturing partnerships, especially at the technical level.
  • The candidate should also have at least two years of recent experience providing global thought leadership, capacity building, technical expertise and providing country technical assistance in climate nutrition action.
Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required, with strong writing and communication skills.
