The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience.
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
- have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
- are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
- are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
- are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
- are between 20 and 36 years of age.
The Immigration and Border Governance (IBG) Unit at IOM Egypt supports relevant Governmental authorities in enhancing their capacities to manage borders efficiently in a coordinated and integrated way. Current and upcoming interventions include extensive capacity building, equipment and infrastructure provision programme for different entities; such as Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Finance departments mandated with border management in Egypt on various technical topics, policy support, initiatives related to International Migration Law (IML), rule of law, rights-based border management, Integrated Border Management (IBM), Humanitarian Border Management (HBM), Maritime Security (MS), countering-cross border crime, development and trade, legal identity (migrant registration, biometrics, travel document standards) and cross border cooperation with neighboring countries in the above domains including implementation of international agreements in support of humane and orderly migration.
Supervision
Under the overall supervision of the Senior Programme Manager- Immigration and Border Governance (IBG) and the Project Officer- Immigration and Border Governance (IBG) and direct supervision of the National Project Officer[AS1] (IBG), the Intern – Immigration & Border Governance (IBG) will be providing technical and administrative support to the thematic programme in support of border management authorities in the Arab Republic of Egypt, maritime security, border control, and integrated border management capacities. They will also provide inputs in the IBG projects at IOM Egypt, supporting the strategic development and implementation of migrants’ human-rights and protection approaches in the Country.
The Intern – Immigration & Border Governance (IBG) will assist with the IBG activities of the Mission. Tasks will include:
- Assist the National Programme support officer in the implementation of assessments, capacity building and technical assistance activities, including training preparation and delivery under the IBG Programme.
- Provide information on the Programme as requested and draft minutes of meetings, reports (external and internal reports) and other written materials/documents related to the Programme deliverables.
- Liaise with other IOM staff members on administration, financial, logistics and operational matters in support of Programme activities.
- Contribute to the development and standardization of templates (reports, questionnaires, surveys, profiles, application, feedback and interviewing forms and others) related to the IBG Programme.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

- The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM personnel.
- The Intern will have the possibility to interact with IOM staff within Headquarters and IOM Missions.
- Enhance professional communication skills by drafting meeting minutes, reports, and other programme-related documentation.
- Build interpersonal skills through liaison with cross-functional teams at IOM, on administrative, financial, logistical, and operational matters.
- Strengthen adaptability, problem-solving, and time-management skills, by supporting multiple programme tasks, in a fast-paced environment.
- Increase understanding of humanitarian, migration, and development programming frameworks and operational practices.
EDUCATION
- Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree (bachelor’s level or equivalent) degree in Political science, Human Rights, or a related field;
- Enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) degree in Political science, or a related field; or,
EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated experience in note-taking and drafting comprehensive and accurate meeting minutes;
- Proven experience in organizing workshops, training sessions, and capacity-building activities;
- Experience in preparing official correspondence, including meeting invitations and follow-up communications;
SKILLS
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills;
- Basic knowledge of social media analytics and reporting;
- Proficiency in using social media management tools;
- Creative thinking and the ability to generate engaging content ideas;
- Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;

Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).

Eligibility and Selection
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.

- Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.
- Candidates are also encouraged to research and study the cost of living in the duty station prior to applying.
- For this programme, IOM will also provide travel arrangements and will cover visa-related costs.

Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by his/her university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.
IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the assignment. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
