Duties and Responsibilities
This internship position is situated in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development (OISC), Office of the Director (OD). The internship is UNPAID and full time.
The location of this internship is at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, however, upon agreement, and in coordination with the needs of the Office interns may work fully remotely/home based. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the work unit to which they are assigned. However, upon agreement, and in accordance with the needs of the Office, interns may work part-time under an FWA arrangement. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individuals' background, the interns' assigned office, as well as the internship period.
Under the general guidance of the Director of OISC, the intern will support the work of OISC by:
Contributing to the monitoring and analysis of the work of UN inter-governmental bodies, includ-ing meetings of the General Assembly and its main committees, as well as ECOSOC on a broadrange of issues, including response to the sustainable development, climate change, the high-level political forum on sustainable development, follow-up to the 2024 Summit of the Future andpreparations for the 2025 World Social Summit;
Supporting meetings of ECOSOC including note taking and summary writing on key issues andmajor developments in the economic, social, environmental fields;
Assisting in the preparation of conferences and meetings related to the 2026 High-level PoliticalForum on sustainable development (HLPF) and the Voluntary National Review preparatoryprocess;
Assist in the preparation of substantive documentation, providing input to speeches, backgroundnotes, briefs and presentations.
Conduct research and analysis in multiple policy areas related to the implementation of 2030Agenda for sustainable development in support of the preparation of reports and presentations;
Assist with information management and correspondence.
Undertaking other tasks as required. Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); (c) subject to review on a case-by-case basis, applicants within a few years from graduation who could not apply earlier and who are in an early stage of their careers; as a first time entry into the workforce; are changing careers or due to compelling family circumstances.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Knowledge of issues in the context of sustainable development would be an advantage.
Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.
Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
