Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is located with the UNODC Regional Office for Afghanistan, Central Asia, Iran and Pakistan (ROCA), Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The internship is for the period of six months with a desired starting date in July 2026, is UNPAID and part-time. Interns work five days per week (25 hours) under the supervision of professional staff of the office to which they are assigned.

The UNODC Regional Office for Afghanistan, Central Asia, Iran and Pakistan (ROCA), based in Tashkent, supports the five Central Asian countries—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan — in addressing challenges related to drugs, crime, corruption, and terrorism. Its work focuses on strengthening the rule of law, improving border security, reinforcing crime prevention and criminal justice systems, and advancing evidence-based approaches to the world drug problem, including both supply and demand reduction.

ROCA operates through a network of Programme Offices across the region and provides technical assistance in areas such as counter-narcotics, intelligence-led policing, forensics, and anti-corruption efforts. In Uzbekistan and the broader region, UNODC collaborates closely with national authorities and international partners to reduce drug trafficking, combat organized crime, counter illicit financial flows, and prevent violent extremism. Its support extends to anti-money laundering initiatives, cybercrime prevention, and legislative assistance related to terrorism.

ROCA also contributes to health and social development efforts, including evidence-based drug use prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and HIV/AIDS responses among vulnerable populations. These initiatives align with the UNODC Global Strategy and contribute to strengthening governance, justice, health, and security frameworks across Central Asia. Under the overall supervision of the UNODC ROCA respective Officer the selected intern will provide support in implementation of activities within the framework UNODC Programme for Central Asia 2022-2027:

Provide support to the organization of meetings, events and conferences, side events to strengthen strategic engagement with UN system partners.

General support in processing, drafting and finalizing training materials

Provide assistance in social media campaigns.

Support to develop communication materials based on good practices, impact example and achievements.

Assist in data collection of science, technology and innovation practices.

Conduct web research and provide analysis on science, technology and innovation and sustainable development issues.

Adding data to the databases

Provide support in operations, including finance, procurement, HR, general administration

Assist with archiving: prepare procurement materials for archiving, register the archived files, up-date the register of archived file

Qualifications/special skills

Pursuing graduate degree in law, international relations, management, business administration, finance, social sciences or other relevant academic disciplines. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Be computer literate in standard software applications;

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have recently completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English and Russian is required for the internship. Knowledge of Uzbek is desirable. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
