Duties and Responsibilities

The mandate and work of the office derives from General Assembly resolution 51/77 and subsequent General Assembly resolutions, as well as successive Security Council resolutions on children and armed conflict. The role of the SRSG-CAAC is to strengthen the protection of children affected by armed conflict, raise awareness, promote the collection of information about the plight of children affected by war and foster international cooperation to improve their protection. This internship is located in the United Nations Analysis and Outreach Hub on Children and Armed Conflict in Doha.

The intern will report to the Deputy Head of the Analysis and Outreach Hub and work closely with the team on various projects and initiatives related to the OSRSG-CAAC mandate. The internship is UNPAID and in-person or remote on a full-time basis (35h/week). The internship duration is 3-6 months. The Political Affairs Intern will perform the functions below to support various projects on a temporary basis.

Conduct research and reference searches on various issues related to the children and armed conflict mandate, including on political and security developments and humanitarian issues.

Participate in meetings with stakeholders and contribute to collaborative projects and initiatives.

Attend and take notes at conferences and meetings.

Assist in preparing and formatting communication materials such as presentations, newsletters, website content, and social media posts.

Support outreach and visibility activities for advocacy campaigns by helping with content preparation and dissemination.

Monitor news articles, press releases, and social media platforms and share relevant information with the team.

Assist in servicing conferences and meetings.

Assist in preparing reports, concept papers, policy documents, talking points, articles and other materials.

Perform other duties including administrative tasks as needed.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(1) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,

(2) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

(3) be computer literate in standard software such as Microsoft Excel, MS Word and Teams or similar; Applicants should be able to demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. In addition, candidates should have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in both English and Arabic are required.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
