Duties and Responsibilities
The intern will contribute to UNICRI’s research initiatives under its Programme Development Funds. This internship is located within UNICRI’s research activities related to cyber and new technologies, specifically malicious uses of emerging technolgies such as satellite-enabled technologies as part of a broader system of digital critical infrastructure. The intern will support ongoing analytical and policy-oriented research examining the evolving links between cyber-enabled crime, organized criminal networks, terrorist use of digital and satellite communications.
The intern will contribute to the following tasks: Conduct desk research on the malicious use of emerging technologies by criminal and terrorist actors, with a particular focus on cyber-enabled threats, digital communications and evolving technological misuse Conduct research on the criminal and terrorist misuse of satellite-enabled technologies, including satellite communication devices, satellite internet services, geospatial technologies and related digital infrastructure
Support analytical and policy-oriented research on the role of satellite-enabled technologies and other emerging technologies as components of broader digital critical infrastructure ecosystems Assist in collecting, organizing and analysing open-source information, academic literature, technical reporting and policy materials related to emerging technologies, cyber-enabled threats and digital critical infrastructure
Support the drafting of background papers, briefing notes, concept notes, presentations and analytical reports related to cyber and new technologies, emerging threat landscapes and responsible technology governance Provide research support to identify emerging trends, risks and future areas of interest relevant to UNICRI’s work on cyber, new technologies and their malicious exploitation Support communication and outreach activities related to research dissemination, where relevant Assist with other research and programme support tasks, as required.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. experience. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts in desirable. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
