Introduction
Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations and the leading UN agency in the field of migration. Working closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners, IOM promotes humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It saves lives and protects people on the move, drives solutions to displacement, and facilitates pathways for regular migration, while providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
IOM is committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive and supportive workplace where all employees can thrive professionally and feel valued. By creating such an environment, IOM aims to better harness the full potential of migration and strengthen its support to people on the move.
Project Context and Scope
Central Asia is an important region for labour migration and relies heavily on labour migration for its development. This mobility is critical to its economy as it provides employment opportunities, decreasing pressure on local labour markets that are not able to absorb new entrants, and contributes to poverty reduction through remittances. However, mobility in the region is characterized by high levels of informality, with workers frequently finding employment through social networks rather than through formal channels, with negative consequences for migrants. While labour migration, remittances have contributed significantly to poverty reduction in Central Asia, low levels of financial inclusion and limited financial literacy limit the potential value of remittances to promote sustainable development and livelihood planning for migrants and their families.IOM’s Mobility Tracking Matrix (MTM) was established in 2022 in Kazakhstan. MTM is adapted to the context in Kazakhstan based on IOM’s Global Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) methodology. MTM is a system that tracks and monitors displacement and population mobility. It is designed to regularly and systematically capture, process and disseminate information to provide a better understanding of the movements and evolving needs of various mobile populations, whether on site or en route.Through project funding from the European Union, the IOM MTM programme is going to collect data through its so-called Return Migrant Survey (RMS). Data-collection activity will take place across Kazakhstan and aim to further enhance the understanding of returned migrants socio-economic profiles, needs and future intentions.
