- Support the PXD RTS to carry out capacity building, training, monitoring and evaluation and technical support to Country Offices in the Region on thematic areas of relevance to PXD.
- Support the PXD RTS in the reviewing, endorsing and tracking of project proposals developed by COs in the Region.
- Support the PXD RTS in the reviewing, approving and tracking of project reports developed by COs in the Region.
- Identify emerging issues relevant to the thematic area, follow thematic developments at the regional and CO level and contribute to the development of thematic policy and reports in collaboration with the PXD RTS.
- Together with the PXD RTS, serve as a resource person for COs in the Region by providing insights in the latest standards, guidelines (particularly for case management), policy and research developments at global, regional and country levels as well as best practices in project implementation.
- In coordination with the Regional Project Development Officer (RPDO) and PXD RTS, support the development of projects that are regional/multi-country, for small COs, and for countries with no IOM presence.
- Under the guidance of the PXD RTS, support with drafting and developing regional thematic guidance notes, information sheets, and tools together with other RTUs in the RO.
- Prepare internal reports, presentations, talking points, speeches, statements and briefings as relevant to PXD as needed.
- In coordination with the RPDO and the PXD RTS, contribute to ongoing knowledge management processes at the RO and COs in the Region, including sharing thematic related information between the COs and RO.
- In the absence of the PXD RTS, ensure the continued functioning of the PXD in Southern Africa by coordinating incoming requests from internal or external partners.
- Participate in conferences, workshops and meetings related to the protection, as required by the PXD RTS and/or the Sub Regional Director (SRD).

- Build knowledge on protection programming in a regional context by supporting thematic analysis and the preparation of guidance notes, information sheets, and tools related to the work of the team.
- Strengthen project development and reporting skills by contributing to the review, tracking, and follow-up of project proposals and reports from Country Offices in the region.
- Improve capacity-building and technical support skills by assisting with trainings, monitoring and evaluation activities on protection-related issues.

- Develop knowledge management and coordination skills by supporting the sharing of thematic information between Country Offices and the Regional Office.

- The Intern will gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
- Gain experience in organization, management, and international cooperation activities.
- Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as an inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration, and work on formulating and editing institutional strategies, priorities and workplans.
- The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM personnel.
- The Intern will have the possibility to interact with IOM staff within Headquarters and IOM Missions.
Education
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent), or in a Master's degree or higher in Political or Social Sciences, Business Administration, Migration Studies, International Relations, Law or a related field from an accredited academic institution; or

Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.
For all applicants, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of French, or Portuguese is an advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
- Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and additional enquiries will only be addressed if the candidate is shortlisted.
- Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.
- Candidates are also encouraged to research and study the cost of living in the duty station prior to applying.
- For this programme, IOM will also provide travel arrangements and will cover visa-related costs.
Notes
Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.
IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
