Solomon Islands has a predominantly rural population, with approximately 600,000 people (74% of the population) living in rural areas and relying largely on subsistence agriculture. Most households engage in small-scale farming primarily for food security, with limited surplus sales. Livestock ownership is widespread, particularly pigs and poultry, across approximately 80,000 households distributed over 350 islands. Organic waste management remains largely informal and unregulated.
Access to modern energy services is limited, especially in rural areas. Fuelwood and other biomass remain the dominant cooking fuels, while electricity supply is scarce and grid access does not reach the majority of rural communities. Electricity tariffs are among the highest in the Pacific region. The country’s Nationally Determined Contribution identifies the energy sector as the main contributor to greenhouse gas emissions (95% of total emissions), underscoring the importance of renewable energy solutions for climate mitigation and sustainable development.
Biogas technology presents a viable opportunity to convert livestock manure and organic waste into clean energy for cooking and power generation, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and traditional biomass while mitigating environmental and health impacts. However, biogas systems in Solomon Islands remain underdeveloped.
SENBIOSIS is a nationwide project supporting biogas investments to transform organic waste into energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve rural livelihoods. Its objectives are to strengthen farmers’ capacity to manage biogas systems and establish sustainable financing mechanisms to support initial capital investments. As a GEN 2 project, it seeks to ensure that women fully benefit from its interventions. As a result, SENBIOSIS will actively engage women as beneficiaries, strengthening financial inclusion, enhancing decision-making power, and addressing gender-specific barriers related to sustainable energy solutions.
The Project Coordinator (PPC) will lead the implementation of SENBIOSIS and support broader programme portfolio coordination and resource mobilization within the UNDP Solomon Islands Office. The role contributes to achieving national climate and development priorities, strengthening partnerships with government and stakeholders, and identifying funding opportunities. Furthermore, gender aspects will be covered by the Coordinator, who will ensure the effective integration of gender equality across project implementation and stakeholder engagement processes.
The position involves work in remote and rural areas, requiring coordination with diverse stakeholders including local communities, government institutions, development partners, and donors.
The Project Coordinator will report primarily to the Resilience and Climate Change Team Leader, Fiji MCO.
Under the overall supervision of the Resilience and Climate Change Team Leader, Fiji MCO, and the Resilience and Climate Change Programme Specialist, Solomon Islands Sub-Office, the PPC will ensure effective planning, coordination, and implementation of all activities under the Sustainable Energy from Biogas in Solomon Islands Project (SENBIOSIS), and will support portfolio coordination and resource mobilization efforts.

Administration & Operations
- Events management (including retreats, trainings and meetings) -Ability to manage events, including venue identification, accommodation, logistics, catering, transportation, and cash disbursements, etc.
- Advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in Engineering, Economics, Agriculture, International Development, Environment, Social Sciences or related field is required, or
- A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the above fields in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Minimum 2 years (with master’s degree) or 4 years (with bachelor’s degree) of progressively responsible experience in climate change-related projects involving the coordination of complex development programmes with multiple stakeholders, consultants, partners and donors. The experience should include programme and portfolio analysis, resource mobilization in sectors such as agriculture, livestock, natural resources management and renewable energy.
- Proven experience coordinating and supervising multidisciplinary teams across different thematic areas, ensuring effective planning, timely delivery of outputs, quality assurance, and performance monitoring;
- Experience coordinated integrated development projects involving multiple partners and technical experts in the sector of agriculture/livestock, natural resources management and renewable energy;
- Strong ability to organize and facilitate workshops, working groups, high-level meetings, and consultations involving government institutions, UN agencies, civil society, private sector actors, and community representatives;
- Experience collaborating with public institutions, including ministries and government agencies, as well as producing high-quality analytical and strategic reports (e.g., mission reports, donor briefs, concept notes, and policy documents).
- At least 3 years of demonstrated experience integrating gender equality and social inclusion considerations into climate change programmes, including experience conducting gender-responsive consultations and contributing to gender analyses and/or gender action plans. Experience in least developed countries and/or remote environments will be considered a strong advantage;
- Previous experience with UNDP/ knowledge of UNDP policies and procedures and experience with vertical environment funds or climate funds (including the GEF, GCF and Adaptation Fund) will be considered a strong asset;
- Demonstrated experience supporting policy development, national strategy formulation, and planning processes in collaboration with government counterparts, ensuring alignment with national priorities, international commitments, and development partner frameworks on climate related issues would be an asset;
- Extensive field experience leading, planning, and coordinating missions in remote and rural areas, including community consultations, stakeholder interviews and participatory assessments. Demonstrated ability to work closely with local authorities, vulnerable populations, and community groups. Proven field experience ensuring inclusive and gender-responsive participation in consultations, decision-making processes, and capacity-building activities, is considered a strong asset;
- Familiarity with Italian development cooperation institutions, mechanisms, and stakeholders would be considered an advantage.
- Fluency in English is required
- Knowledge of other UN languages is an asset
